Tax form 1040NR is a federal tax form for non-U.S. residents who received any income (trade or business) from a U.S. source. This form is not included in any version of the tax preparation software TurboTax. In fact, none of the popular commercial software programs support either Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ.
Generally, if you are a nonresident alien, you must file a Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ if you are engaged in a trade or business in the United States, or have any other U.S. source income on which the tax was not fully paid by the amount withheld.
Unfortunately, when it comes to tax software for non-resident taxes, TurboTax doesn’t support the necessary forms, treaty elections, calculations and supporting statements needed to properly prepare cross border tax returns.
Whether you are a non-resident who needs to file a 1040NR; or you became a dual status alien after moving to the United States or obtaining a green card; or you need to make a treaty election (Form 8833); or report your interest in a foreign corporation (For 5471), foreign partnership (Form 8865) or a foreign trust (Form 3520), then TurboTax won’t be able to help you with these situations.
